Make a series of pencil dots 1/4 inch from edge of oval and one inch apart.
Punch in it a series of holes 3/4 of an inch apart, and 1/2 inch from edge of each short side.
Along the edge of these punch (with a conductor's punch or one that can be bought at a kindergarten supply place) holes an inch apart and 1/4 inch from edge.
Now cut a series of parallel lines from the fold toward the edge, stopping each about 1/2 inch from edge.
Connect these two points by a straight line and draw another parallel to, and three-fourths of an inch from it.
Trim three-sixteenths of an inch from the under side of the seam and crease the upper side of the seam over this.
Start buttonholes 1 inch from beg of border as follows: K 3, bind off 2, P across.
Next, baste again ¼-inch from edge, and sew the second time, by machine.
Baste ¼-inch from edge of band, and between the two rows of gathering stitches.
Gather petticoat ¼-inch from edge, with two gathering threads one below the other.
The size of this larvæ had so much increased that it was now visible to the naked eye, measuring, indeed, as much as 1/30 of an inch from head to tail.
The longest of my recent specimens, however, scarcely exceeds two inches, whilst the smallest and most perfect (the one at Oxford) measures less than an inch fromhead to tail.
