The real of eight received a new name, Escudo de plata, and was to issue at an equivalence of 10 reals of the new silver.
The escudo or crown remained the standard gold coin.
For larger transactions multiples of the escudo were struck, known as doblones de a dos, de a cuatro and de a ocho, containing respectively 2, 4 and 8 escudos.
